Tap Outs
Submission grappling is an exercise in compassion and trust. Just about any submission technique, if applied quickly and forcefully, will result in injury. If you are applying a submission technique on another student during practice or sparring, it is your responsibility to apply the technique with control such that you ‘ease’ into the hold in such a way that the other student can ‘tap out’ to signify submission. If, at any time during the session, you feel or hear the other student ‘tap’, then immediately release the hold or technique. In contrast, if a hold or technique is being applied to you and you feel uncomfortable or at the point of injury at any time, it is your responsibility to tap out yourself. You will be instructed how to ‘tap out’ in class.
